If the product does not have access to the Internet, it cannot reference the activation code information and will not be aware that the code has been extended. When you follow the renewal process, the product needs to reference the Registration Database on the Internet, which has the updated information, including the new expiration date. When the license key is generated, it has an expiration key that is hardcoded into the key. This happens because of the expiration date built in to the activation code.
